Metropolitan Pop & Jazz (MPJ)

As a dynamic extension to our classical offerings, the Metropolitan Pop & Jazz (MPJ) Youth Wind Orchestra brings a fresh and engaging blend of jazz and pop. Featuring a rhythm section with electric guitar, bass, and keyboard, our orchestra allows young musicians to explore a variety of styles, from contemporary film scores and wind/brass band pieces to diverse jazz genres like swing, bebop, and fusion, as well as modern pop compositions.

Under the mentorship of conductor Jacky Leung, students will develop essential skills in ensemble collaboration and creative interpretation, with opportunities to perform at festivals, collaborative concerts with pop and jazz artists, and on international stages. As they master the unique techniques of jazz, students will enjoy a performance-centered experience that helps them develop and thrive in these vibrant musical genres.

Why MPJ?
  • MPJ offers a rich repertoire that spans a variety of jazz styles, modern pop arrangements, and contemporary compositions. This enables students to explore a broad array of musical genres, from classic jazz standards and bebop to innovative pop collaborations, offering a stimulating and diverse musical experience.
  • Playing in a wind orchestra focuses on the dynamic interplay between wind, brass, percussion, and rhythm section instruments. This creates a distinct sound and ensemble dynamic where each section contributes melodic, harmonic, or rhythmic elements, encouraging individual expression while fostering a cohesive group performance.
  • The MPJ opens doors to a wide variety of performance settings, from community events and private showcases to online and live concerts. Students will have opportunities to perform in small ensembles, big orchestra settings, and even collaborative performances with jazz and pop artists. These experiences extend beyond traditional concert halls, taking young musicians to local and international stages, festivals, and pop concerts, enriching their exposure to the professional music world.
  • With a focus on jazz and pop music, students are encouraged to engage creatively, especially through the exploration of improvisation — a key aspect of jazz. This not only enhances their technical abilities but also nurtures creativity and personal expression within various musical settings, from classic jazz to contemporary pop fusions.
  • Under the leadership of conductor Jacky Leung, MPJ provides a unique blend of jazz and pop music education. Jacky, an award-winning saxophonist and Yamaha accredited artist, brings over 15 years of experience in teaching and performing. His expertise in both classical and contemporary music ensures that students receive top-notch guidance, helping them grow in a comprehensive and dynamic learning environment.
